When Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked on the “Island of Doom,” what is now Galveston, little did he know that the small port city would play such a large role in Spanish, Mexican and Texas history. Galveston was eventually named after Bernardo de Galvez, and the first European settlers arrived in the early 19th Century. Soon after, the pirate Jean Lafitte inhabited the island and was the self named head of state for four years before being ousted by the United States Navy. It was then that the Port of Galveston began to receive national prominence as one of the largest ports in the United States. That all ended in 1900 when the “Great Storm” nearly wiped out the entire island. With the town decimated, many people who had called Galveston home left for other parts of Texas. As a result, over 10,000 Eastern European, Greek and Jewish immigrants from the northeast immigrated down to the port city in what became known as the “Galveston Movement”
